Ekblad Injury
A long-term injury to the Panthers’ No. 1 defenseman really hurts. There has been talk that he was in the Norris Trophy conversation and maybe that is true. In my ratings, he is a little outside that group but probably Top 10 in the league this season. 11 goals in 35 games is a difference maker for a defenseman.
Could Gustav Forsling take on a bigger role? He played a season-high 25:34 Sunday.
Eric Staal to Montreal
The Buffalo Sabres traded veteran center Eric Staal to the Montreal Canadiens for a third and fifth-round pick.
Staal, 36, is not having a productive season, managing three goals and 10 points in 32 games and mired in a 23-game goal-scoring drought, but his isolated impacts are favorable at both ends of the ice and that is not unusual for him, even late in his career.
He is not needed to be an impact player in Montreal but Staal can play in the top nine, especially if he can slide to the wing when the team is fully heathy.
Brendan Lemieux to Los Angeles
Lemieux is a 25-year-old winger who leads the league with 59 PIM in 31 GP but has seven points (2 G, 5 A) and has yet to score 20 points in an NHL season. Not sure he is better than the options that the Kings already have on their fourth line but maybe the Kings are looking for someone with Lemieux’s specific skill set.
Alexander Volkov to the Anaheim for Antoine Morand
Volkov is a 23-year-old winger who had six points (3 G, 3 A) in 28 GP over the past two seasons for Tampa Bay.
Morand is a 22-year-old winger who has 22 points (6 G, 16 A) in 75 AHL games over the past two seasons.
