I have finally managed to put together my goaltender rankings for fantasy hockey this season and if there is anything that counts as my arch-enemy when it comes to fantasy hockey, it might be goaltender projections.
The consistency from year to year is not nearly the same as with top scorers so there are bigger misses. I mean, I was really high on Carter Hart going into last season, so beware. There are a few goaltenders worthy of an early pick - Andrei Vasilevskiy is a comfortable first rounder but, otherwise, there is some significant variance possible for the Top 25 or so goaltenders. Maybe it’s just a matter of staying healthy for some but that can’t just be waved away. Durability in a scarce position is valuable.
Then there is what is happening with teams like Dallas, Arizona, and Buffalo. The Stars seem like they have too many goaltenders. Even with Ben Bishop still recovering from injury, they have Anton Khudobin, Jake Oettinger, and Braden Holtby. Something has to give there.
In Arizona, after trading Darcy Kuemper and Adin, the Coyotes are looking at a season with Carter Hutton and Josef Korenar in net while the Sabres lost Linus Ullmark (and Hutton) to free agency and scrambled for Craig Anderson and Aaron Dell. Maybe that means Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen gets a shot but it is really hard to envision a world in which the Coyotes and Sabres have goaltenders that are viable for fantasy hockey this season.
In any case, here are my goaltender rankings for this season:
